International Outreach Camp Ukraine 2008
IOC Ukraine 2008 invites 10-12 international students to join us for a 2-phase applied program. You will arrive in Kyiv and travel to our campsite in the Ternopil region for Phase I. Here you will attend classes in project planning, team development and teach-the-teacher. Beginning on day four, you will implement in-camp projects you have helped design, run team events and teach optional classes alone or in partnership with others.
During Phase I, you will help put the final touches to plans for Phase II projects that begin four days after Phase I ends. Phase I culminates with an extravaganza of talent! After spending three days on a cultural excursion, Phase II begins with projects that have been pre-selected by international students and 40 pre-selected Ukrainian students. Projects last for six days and include: Human Rights Camp for Orphans, Arts Festival of drama and fine art on topics of HIV/AIDS, Orphans Creativity Camp and Community Awareness Program, and a theater production, Talking about domestic abuse. Phase II culminates with a two-day evaluation in Kyiv for all Phase II participants and a discussion about how to bring these programs back to your country.
Talking About Domestic Violence
Talking About Domestic Violence is a Healthy Relationships Community Awareness Project organized by Andrea Ahlert.
The Phase II Project will be a community theater performance in the city of Cherkassy addressing domestic violence issues in Ukraine. The performance will also concentrate on healthy relationships, and will be written and performed by Ukrainian youth from the International Outreach Camp.
Talking About Domestic Violence will raise community awareness and begin a cultural dialogue about the prevalence of domestic violence in Ukraine. Also, at the performance, information will be offered by local, national, and international organizations. Both Ukrainian youth and domestic violence organizations seek to educate about the realities of domestic violence. Domestic violence in Ukraine not only affects those who are abused, but also has a substantial effect on family members, friends, co-workers, other witnesses, and the community at large. Children, who grow up witnessing domestic violence, are among those seriously affected by this crime. Ukrainian youth involved in the project will receive comprehensive domestic violence training in order to facilitate future projects.
The entire project will be filmed in order to provide an educational film for the International Outreach Camp, Ukrainian youth, Peace Corps volunteers, domestic violence organizations, and teachers in Ukraine. This film will exemplify project planning, implementation and youth involvement in pressing social issues.
