Safety and security

Keeping participants safe while allowing them the ability to discover a new culture is a major focus of IOC. A high ratio of staff members to international students will provide a safe and secure environment from which to learn and explore. In addition to 3 Directors and 10-12 Peace Corps Volunteers, staff will include local Student Counsellors and Ambassadors. Ambassadors are student peers who are familiar with the local area and have received special safety training. They will be available to introduce international students to the local community, to answer questions on cultural issues and help them find and use the resources they need, such as internet and post.

Directors are available both before and during camp to respond to parental concerns or questions. During camp, parents will be provided with 24-hour contact information in case of emergency.

Participants are also required to take responsibility for their own safety by following the Code of Conduct. Staff will implement this policy at all times. Failure to follow the Code of Conduct may result in immediate eviction from the program.

We will have local contacts for emergency medical care, however, each participant is responsible for providing their own medical and travel insurance.
